Too slow getting back
You came out, the shooter played around you.
You come off your line and get rounded. Now you might feel like never rushing out again. But whether it was the right call depends on that specific moment.
What can help you right now
- 1First, tune back into live play and get back into the right position.
- 2Tell yourself, 'That one didn't come off', instead of 'I can't do this'. You don't need to rush out recklessly on the next shot to make up for it.
- 3Stick to what you worked on in goalkeeper training. If there's time, sort out with your defence who picks up the unmarked attacker.
Here's what that can look like in handball
You came out late on the fast break. On the next attack, don't just glue yourself to the goal line out of fear – decide based on the situation and what you practised.
For your next training session
Recreate the situation with your goalkeeper coach: what was your cue to come out? Practise making that call in realistic drills, not as a test of courage.
How you can bring it up
'I was hesitant coming off my line. What cue would help me make that decision in this situation?'
Things you don't have to deal with alone
'Always step out' and 'always stay put' aren't blanket solutions. Hesitation isn't a character flaw.
