Motivation gone? What helps when you're just not in the mood for training

Not feeling like it isn't always a problem. Sometimes it's tiredness, sometimes something else. Here's how to figure it out.

HandballMotivation

Your bag is packed in the hallway, but you just don't want to go. Not today, maybe not next week either. Almost everyone in competitive sports experiences this. The question is: What's behind it?

Three common reasons

  • You're worn out: too little downtime, too much school, too much training.
  • You lack a goal: Everything feels the same, you see no progress.
  • Something else is bothering you: stress in the team, with the coach, or at home.

What you can do

  • Ask yourself honestly: Am I tired or just not in the mood? If it's tiredness, a break helps, not pushing harder.
  • Remember why you started: What do you enjoy about handball?
  • Set a small goal for your next training session: “Ten clean jump shots today.”
  • Speak up if it's taking a while – with your coach, parents, or friends.

Out of the game

A 14-year-old hasn't been motivated for weeks. During a motivation check, he realises: it's because of the new training group where he doesn't know anyone. He asks a teammate if they can go to training together. Things get better.

Remember this

Lack of motivation is a signal, not a failure. Find out what's behind it – then you'll know what helps.
