Criticism from the coach
Loudly, in front of the team or during a timeout.
The coach is shouting and all you hear is that you're supposedly doing everything wrong. Constructive instruction is very different from an insult. You don't have to put up with being demeaned just to fit in.
What can help you right now
- 1If there's a specific instruction in there, just focus on that: for example, 'get back sooner'. You don't need to process the whole lecture during an attack.
- 2If you're unsure, ask at the next break in play: 'What exactly do you want me to do on the next attack?'
- 3If there are insults, threats, or constant put-downs: get support from a trusted adult. You don't have to face a talk with the coach on your own.
Here's what that can look like in handball
'You're always sleeping!' isn't a clear instruction. You ask later: 'Do you mean getting back after losing the ball? Please tell me what to change without insulting me.'
For your next training session
Practise asking a quick follow-up question with someone you trust. Also choose one specific instruction you want to try out in the next session.
How you can bring it up
'I want to use your feedback. When you put me down in front of everyone, it's hard to take the instruction in. Please tell me specifically what you want me to do.'
Things you don't have to deal with alone
Mental tools don't make hurtful treatment acceptable. If you don't feel safe, talk to someone you trust first instead of facing it alone.

Suitable Mental Hacks
Rephrase sentence
When a thought like "I'm really bad today" runs through your head – during a break or after the game.
Whose expectation is that?
Before trials or important games, when everyone's got an opinion – best to do it calmly beforehand.
Three questions instead of overthinking
After the game, at the earliest on the way home – not immediately after the final whistle and not at night.
